Fearing someone will recognize him from his picture in the newspaper, Chris lives in his car and moves from town to town. After eluding authorities and remaining solitary for four years, he meets a tragic young woman named Shelby.
Shelby drives him crazy. He cannot endure--nor resist her. Right before he leaves the area, Chris unwittingly helps her commit a crime. They flee the scene together despite their mutual feelings of antagonism.
Desperate for refuge from an impending blizzard, the runaway duo hide in the parking lot of a cathedral until the priest leaves. Once they break inside, surrounded by the grandeur and stillness of the enormous church, they realize that to survive, they must live counter-intuitively from how they survive on the street. Not only do they need to rely on each other, they must learn to trust each other.
The blizzard lasts for days.
During this time, Shelby often reacts with repressed anger as she struggles to deal with the senseless death of her foster sister. And a strange and terrifying encounter within the darkened cathedral forces Chris to reflect on his own misfortune and bleak future.
When the storm ends, Chris and Shelby emerge into the frigid air. They have nowhere to go. They are still homeless--that hasn't changed; but the experience has transformed them in profound ways. But...change isn't always a good thing.
